Nehru was a principal leader of the Indian nationalist movement in the 1930s and 1940s. Upon India's independence in 1947, he became the first Prime Minister of India, serving for 16 years.

Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad in British India. His father, Motilal Nehru (1861–1931), a self-made wealthy barrister who belonged to the Kashmiri Pandit community, served twice as president of the Indian National Congress, in 1919 and 1928. His mother, Swarup Rani Thussu (1868–1938), who came from a well-known Kashmiri Brahmin family settled in Lahore, was Motilal's second wife, his first having died in childbirth. Jawaharlal was the eldest of three children. The elder of his two sisters, Vijaya Lakshmi, later became the first female president of the United Nations General Assembly.

Nehru was educated at home by private tutors until the age of 15, when he was sent to England to study at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He graduated from Cambridge in 1910 with a degree in natural sciences. After graduating, Nehru returned to India and worked as a barrister in Allahabad. However, he soon became involved in the Indian independence movement.

In 1916, Nehru met Mahatma Gandhi, who became his mentor and lifelong friend. Gandhi was a key figure in the Indian independence movement, and Nehru was inspired by his philosophy of non-violence and civil disobedience. In 1942, Nehru was arrested by the British for his role in the Quit India Movement. He was released in 1945, and he continued to work for Indian independence. In 1947, India gained its independence from Britain, and Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India.
